Justin’s POV I’m listening to everything that Brian is saying, and all I can think about, is that everything is so messed up now. What if Lindsay wins the court battle? The courts always give custody of the children to the mother’s. I don’t want to rain on Brian’s parade and upset him, but I also want him to start thinking realistically about what’s going on. He practically drags me to see his lawyer, and I find myself unable to say anything. I don’t have the heart to make him sad. So I just sit next to Brian, and listen to the lawyer as he talks about Brian’s case against Lindsay. After a little while though, I can’t help myself, so I ask the question that’s on my mind. “But I thought that 80% of the time, custody of the child or children is awarded to the mother.” The lawyer looks at me and then says, “That is true. The only reason that happens though is because the father is incapable of being around the child or children. It means that the father is either abusive or neglectful of the child or children. Brian is neither abusive nor neglectful of Gus, so I see no reason why a judge wouldn’t grant him full or joint custody of his son.” I take in the words that the lawyer is saying, and then I ask another question. “What about when Lindsay or Melanie brings up Brian’s past, or even mine? We both used to do drugs recreationally, and my ex-boyfriend is trying to kill me. Do you really think that a judge is going to grant Brian custody of Gus, when they would both be around me, when Shane is trying to fucking kill me?” The lawyer looks at me and then I listen as he goes to speak. “Mr. Taylor, the judge will be well aware of the situation that you find yourself in with your ex-boyfriend. Now whether or not it will be a factor in his decision for who gets custody of Gus, I have no idea. This judge is supposed to be a pretty decent guy, but then again it could just be talk.” I don’t know what to do, so as the lawyer wraps up his speech on Brian’s case, I just nod, and then ask Brian if we can leave. I don’t want to think about all of this. I also don’t want Brian stressing himself out anymore. He’s pregnant for fuck’s sake, and he’s dealing with so much shit. Christ. I’m going to have to call all of my lawyer’s as well. So I talk Brian into going home, and taking a nap. While he sleeps, I get on my cell phone and I call my lawyer’s. I talk to them about the situation with Shane, and then we work on some ways to handle it. Then I tell them to set up a trust fund for Gus, and for the child that Brian and I are going to be having. They get the information they need, and then I tell them to take all of the money from my account, and put it into Brian’s. “But Mr. Taylor, you’re putting your entire life’s savings in his account. That’s $2 million dollars. I don’t think that’s a wise thing to do.” I sigh and then say, “Well Jonathan, it’s a good thing that I didn’t ask what you thought. Just add the $2 million to Brian’s account.” I snap my cell phone shut, and then I join Brian in the room once more. Brian looks at me and then says, “What was that all about?” I sigh softly and then tell him. “I put a little bit of money into your account.” Brian stares at me. “That didn’t sound like it was just a little bit of money. It sounded like your lawyer was freaking out over the amount. How much did you put into my account, er, our account?” I shrug as if it’s no big deal, and then I say softly,“$2 million dollars.” Brian looks at me like I just told him that I wanted to go out and sleep with a woman. “What?!” He splutters in shock, and I just shrug once more. “You asked me how much I put into the account, and I told you. I put in $2 million dollars.” Brian’s eyes are wide and he looks like he wants to say something, but just doesn’t know what to say. So I just continue to talk. “It’s my entire life’s savings. Each of my paintings sell anywhere from $300 dollars to $90,000 dollars.” Brian looks like he’s about to spit up a lung in shock, so I just take a seat next to him, and tell him that everything is going to be okay. “I will take care of the three of us, and Gus too, if things work out the way that we want them too.” Brian sighs and then says, “Why are you putting your entire life’s savings into the account? I could take all of it out one day, and run off with it. Then you would be broke.” I make a motion with my hand that it doesn’t matter. “I could lose all of my money, and it wouldn’t matter if I lost it. It’s just money, Brian. Money doesn’t make people happy, at least not me. Besides, even if you would run off with the money, I still have my talent. I can make more money with my paintings.” As Brian thinks about this, I finish with, “It doesn’t matter anyway. All that matters is that you, Gus, and our child are taken care of, in case anything ever happens to me. I’ve changed my will to include you, Gus, and our child. I’ve also decided to sell all of my property. If it’s okay with you, I was thinking that we could get our own home together.” Brian looks at me and then says, “Wait, all of this is happening so fast.” Since I know that Brian only slept for a few minutes while I was on my cell phone, I curl up behind him, and slip my arm around his waist. “Don’t think about it now, Brian. Just get some rest. I only want to take care of my family.” I get comfortable behind Brian, and close my eyes. I know that he’s not going to go right to sleep. I just hope that Brian doesn’t stay up worrying about everything right now.
